The Best New Architecture Across Australia

Australia’s most outstanding new architecture has been revealed in the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2025 National Architecture Awards Shortlist. Comprising 62 individual building projects from every state and territory (plus two internationally), the shortlist represents the cutting edge in architectural innovation from Australia’s sharpest design minds.

The shortlist for 2025 (detailed on the following pages of this media release) acts as a roadmap to the new building projects that are shaping Australia’s contemporary built environment. Attracting hundreds of entrants from Australia and overseas, the shortlist encapsulates all aspects of residential, community and commercial building design across 14 categories. The Australian Institute of Architects is the country’s peak body for architecture, and the National Architecture Awards are the country’s premier design prize.

Australian Institute of Architects 2025 National Architecture Awards Jury Chair, Jane Cassidy, explained the jury’s shortlisting process.

“The Australian Institute of Architects National Awards program has stood as a benchmark for architectural excellence, recognising projects that endure, these are the precedents that inform the future of our cities and communities. The awards celebrate design that is impactful, innovative, inclusive, and deeply embedded in the narratives of Country, community and climate,” said Cassidy.

“This program acknowledges architecture’s role in shaping resilient systems, uplifting communities, and unearthing future leaders. It honours projects that embrace sustainability, social impact, budget optimisation and technical brilliance, while challenging traditional paradigms and unlocking economic, environmental and social impact beyond their site boundaries. In an era defined by climate urgency, affordability, digital disruption and social complexity, the National Awards provide a compass. They help chart our course toward a built environment that matters—not just now, but for generations to come.”

Each year, the projects in the National Architecture Award shortlist are selected by an esteemed panel of industry experts and leaders. This year, the jury includes:

  • Jane Cassidy FRAIA (Jury Chair) | Immediate Past President of the Australian Institute of Architects, Director and Asia-Pacific Service Line Leader for Architecture & Design, GHD Design
  • Ninotschka Titchkosky FRAIA | Architectural Innovator
  • Yang Yang Lee RAIA | Architect, Lee Yang Yang Architect
  • Martyn Hook RAIA | Professor of Architecture and Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor Precincts, RMIT University, Founding Director Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects
  • Kavita Gonsalves | Associate Principal & Sustainability Design Lead APAC, Populous

A comprehensive judging process by the jury determines the eventual winners of the Awards, which will be announced on 6 November. In an exhaustive two-week period, the jury will travel to every state and territory in Australia, visiting all shortlisted projects in person (and the select international projects virtually). The jury’s travels across the country can be followed on the Australian Institute of Architects’ Instagram account.

The eventual winners of the 2025 National Architecture Awards will be unveiled at the 2025 National Architecture Awards in Canberra on Thursday, 6 November 2025, at The National Gallery of Australia.
