Hale Memorial Hall was constructed in 1961 to commemorate the former students of Hale School who died in the World Wars.
It was the first Brutalist style building constructed in Australia and was designed by Marshall Clifton and Anthony Brand, with Brand, Ferguson and Solarski.
KHA won a design competition in 2019 with a brief to increase Memorial Hall’s seating capacity and, alongside the hall, introduce a new performing arts and media studies precinct.
The design of the new precinct provides a contemporary reference to the expressive masonry and colonnades of the original Memorial Hall.
The adaptive re-use of Memorial Hall allows the building to honour Hale’s past and provide ongoing opportunities for whole of school gatherings.
Memorial Hall was included in the State Register of Heritage Places in April 2024 and remains a central and symbolic landmark on the Hale School campus.
Hale School Memorial Hall, built in the early 1960s, was the first example of Brutalist Architecture in Australia. Designed by Tony Brand and built in Beton Brut, Memorial Hall represented a confidence in an emerging Australian modernism, featuring innovative concrete engineering by legendary Perth structural engineer Peter Bruchel. The building was funded by past students, and commemorated the war time service of its Alma Mater.
A striking modernist bas relief frescos representing the craters of the battlefield adorn the solid balustrade.
No longer fit for purpose and unable to accommodate the entire school assembly as intended, the building was under threat of possible demolition to make way for a larger structure. Architects KHA instead proposed a stunningly simple expansion of the original hall by incorporating existing external walkways running along the long sides of the building, converting these into seating galleries, and adding an additional 400 seats. Other significant modifications include a reworked entry, new acoustic ceilings, and a new stage with fly tower and an upgraded back of house.
The new works have been constructed in a white brick that matches the colour or the existing painted concrete, while providing a textural indication of the old and new.
The cleverness of the adaptive reuse of this building is the enormous increase in utility afforded by relatively minor works. In doing so, the Memorial Hall has been given a new lease life that sees the retention of an incredibly important early Australian modernist work.
The Memorial Hall at Hale School has played a key role in the lives of our students for 60 years.
One of the goals underpinning the decision to redevelop Memorial Hall was creating a Precinct which would continue to enrich the students experience at Hale School.
The Precinct provides a distinguished presence to the south-western corner of the campus, representing Hale’s commitment to grow its media and drama curriculum whilst creating a lasting legacy for students and future generations.
We are thrilled with the outcome. This is a game changer for Hale and thank you to KHA and everyone involved.
