The SA Chapter represents the interests of all its local members across the state. We promote the advancement of the profession by providing education and research programs and by engaging with local and state governments to address issues relating to the built environment.
We also work with local media outlets to promote discussion about the value of architecture in society and we foster strong industry partnerships to create more continuing education opportunities for our members.
The SA Chapter recognises the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of the Adelaide region. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
We’re pleased to announce the winners for this year’s SA Architecture Awards 2021. Read more about the SA Architecture Award winners here
Part of a national awards program run by the Australian Institute of Architects.
The Act to proclaim the start of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in South Australia came into operation on 1 July 2020. All practicing architects will be required to undertake CPD, and report their CPD annually at the time of renewing registration.
The first full year of operation will be from 1 July 2020 – 30 June 2021, and the Architectural Practice Board of SA has set an amount of 10 points for this first year only. At least 5 points must be Formal CPD, with the remaining points Informal. This reduced amount is in recognition of the current economic situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the fact that this is the first year of mandated CPD in South Australia.
From July 2021, the full 20 points will be required – including a minimum of 10 Formal points. For more information please visit the Board’s website
UPDATE: Monday 13 September 2021
The APBSA August newsletter contained clarification to the SA CPD Rules. The Important Information CPD Points item states that ‘suppliers are not recognised as providers of Formal CPD in SA’.
This advice reflects a national decision made by all Boards at an AACA forum held in 2019. However, we understand that the APBSA is the only Board to implement this decision to date.
In light of the APBSA’s advice, The SA Chapter recommends that architects registered in South Australia do not count supplier CPD for formal points. This includes:
· supplier CPD promoted as being eligible for formal CPD
· supplier CPD promoted through other organisations, including the Institute’s Refuel program.
In the interim if you have queries regarding the validity of the CPD you have undertaken prior to the information provided in the August newsletter, please contact the APBSA to clarify the situation.
The Institute has contacted the APBSA for clarification and will be continuing to advocate for the place of educational CPD that provides architects with understanding of materials and services.
archi ed is a task group of the SA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects. We want to encourage an appreciation of architecture and the built environment in school students and the wider community. We will do this by introducing school students to the world of architecture, the thinking behind architectural design and the many factors that contribute to what, where, how and why buildings are constructed.
At the Institute we often see images of a building in an article in the media that do not attribute the architect for the project.
As author of the work, the architect has moral rights in relation to the design and should be attributed when images of the work – whether digital renders, hand drawings or photographs – are published. Even where copyright in the projects is transferred to the client, as is the case with projects for government and some private client organisations, the architect retains moral rights.
Where images are provided to the media this information should be included by the client for the project, where construction is yet to occur. Once the building is completed, it is the building owner’s responsibility to provide this information. Attribution of the photographer or artist, where applicable, is also required, but does not negate the requirement to attribute the architect.
We’ve developed some form letters around media attribution to be sent under Institute letterhead reminding people of their role. Please feel free to use these templates or contact the Institute if you would like us to send it on your behalf.
SA Designers for Diversity exists to ensure that architecture and affiliated designers of built environments can work in a profession that is equally and meaningfully navigable for all practitioners, regardless of gender, age, race, sexual preference, family structure, whether able-bodied, living with a medical condition or disability. We also value and recognise these qualities in the built environment.
We have a range of SA Practices who have signed on to the program including:

You understand the importance of life-long learning, enjoy researching, you are active in fuelling inspiration and globally aware. You share our values of beauty, curiosity, excellence, generosity, integrity, leadership, passion and success.
You know that problems exist to be creatively solved. You take direction to complete and augment an overall design, pushing the potential, while mentoring less experienced designers. You apply rigour, have a growth mindset, thrive in a collaborative environment and know that an inspired, cohesive team will realise better outcomes than any one individual.
Technically you have good documentation skills for all stages of project delivery. You’ll naturally embody design acumen, be astute in problem-solving and interested in self-development. You’ll be confident in 3D modelling and the Adobe Creative Suite. Bonus points for competency in Sketchup, Rhino and computational modelling.
