Welcome to the WA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects.

Within these pages you will find information on the Chapter’s history, policies, member services and initiatives to be delivered over the next 12 months.

These are both stimulating and challenging times for Western Australian architects, as the State enjoys economic growth and prosperity unprecedented since the 60s resources boom.

The city lost a great many of its more significant buildings to development during the 60s and we are now presented - for the second time - with a boom-fuelled development opportunity.

With the benefit of hindsight, the chance now exists to shape our city’s built environment decisively for the future - within the context of a considered, cohesive framework informed by the principles of design excellence and community preference. Architects have a central role to play in the realisation of this opportunity.

In 2008, the Chapter is firmly committed to ensuring that the voice of architects is heard in the debate on the built environment and that our opinion is sought on the many architecturally focussed issues confronting State and Local Governments in Western Australia.

A priority will be to continue the dialogue with Governments to ensure that the process and terms of engagement for architects seeking government commissions, is fair and reasonable. Emphasis will be placed on establishing fee levels commensurate with the level of professional skill that architects bring to a project.

The Chapter will work as closely as possible with the Government Architect and make every effort to ensure that the design skills of Western Australian architects are recognised.

Finally, our objective will be to encourage greater involvement by all our members in the activities of the Chapter, as the one organisation that can best promote the collective interests of architects in the State.
