There are two (2) vacancies on National Council in this 2023 election.
National Council comprises elected members of National, Chapter, EmAGN and SONA Presidents and six Nationally-Elected Councillors from the Institute’s general membership.
National Council acts as an advisory body reporting to the Board, providing strategic direction and policy development. National Council meets at least three times a year, both in person and via electronic means.
Following the 2020 Constitution changes, six Nationally-Elected National Councillors are elected by the voting members, each for a three-year term. To achieve the required number of councillors and the overlapping term periods in the Constitution, there are two (2) vacancies in this 2023 election round.
Elections will be held for the Chapter President roles in the ACT, Victorian, NT and Queensland Chapters.
Eligible members are invited to nominate or be nominated for the role of Chapter President of their Chapter in 2024 for a two-year term. The elected President will represent their Chapter on National Council.
Eligible nominees must be registered architects in the Chapter territory. Current Chapter Presidents seeking re-election must re-nominate.
A By-election will be held in Tasmania to fill a current casual vacancy for the Chapter president role.
Eligible members are invited to nominate or be nominated for the role of Tasmanian Chapter President for the remainder of the current term until the first meeting of 2025.
Eligible nominees must be registered architects in the Chapter territory.
There are five (5) vacant positions on each Chapter Council.
Chapter Councillors are elected for a two (2) year term where the Chapter Council’s key roles are to identify the strategic priorities for the Chapter aligned with the Institute’s Strategic Plan and respond to issues relevant to the profession and Institute members within the Chapter.

Voting in the Institute’s 2023 Annual General Elections is now open for those National and Chapter election streams where there are more nominees than the number of positions to be filled.
Voting for the following elections streams opened as at 9 AM AEDT on Tuesday 28 November 2023:
Nationally-elected National Councillors – two (2) roles nationally.
Chapter President – one (1) role
Chapter President by-election – one (1) casual vacancy
Chapter Councillors – five (5) roles in each Chapter.
There are two (2) vacancies on National Council in this 2021 election, with six (6) candidates.
The election for these National Council positions is contested and a vote must be held.
Those Members with voting rights are able to vote for their preferred candidate(s) in order of numerical preference by selecting: 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. Voters may indicate a minimum of two preferences (“1”, “2”) and it is optional to vote for any remaining candidates.
Votes will be counted using the Optional Multiple-Preferential system. In this system, all numbered voting preferences indicated, up to the total number of candidates to be elected which is 2, are called primary votes and are equal in value. All other numbered preferences beyond those primary votes will be used to allocate each voter’s preferences.
Queensland Chapter
This year, a vote will be held for the Chapter President role in the Queensland Chapter.
Eligible members are invited to vote on the two (2) candidates for the role of Chapter President in 2024 for a two-year term. The elected President will represent their Chapter on National Council.

Eligible members must be residents in the respective Chapter territory to vote in a Chapter President election.
One nomination was received for the Chapter President role in the case of the ACT, NT and Victorian Chapters and therefore each of those candidates will be declared as elected, uncontested.
A vote is not required for the Chapter President roles in those Chapters where the term of office of the current Chapter President / Chair ends early in 2025 (NSW, SA, Tasmania, WA and International).
All eligible members can now vote in their relevant state elections. Member categories eligible to vote are Member, Fellow, Life Fellow, Associate and Graduates.

The Nationally-Elected positions on National Council represent the whole membership.
Following the 2020 Constitution changes, six National Councillors hold office on National Council, with two (2) vacancies in this 2023 election round to be elected by the voting members.
From 2021, all appointments of National Councillors are for three-year terms. The successful candidates of this election take office at the first National Council meeting in 2024 until the first meeting of 2027.
