New Chapter President 2009-2011
The new Chapter President, to take office from the first National Council meeting on March 26, is Richard Crawford. On behalf of all Tasmanian members and staff, I congratulate Richard and look forward to working with him for the coming term.
Richard follows in his father's footsteps, as Charles Crawford was also Chapter President from 1958 to 1960.
Vale Bill Shugg AM, LFRAIA
Bill Shugg, a former Chapter President (1968-1970) and National President (1971-72) died on January 11 aged 83. Bill was a partner in the firm Shugg & Moon, which later became Bush Parkes Shugg & Moon (or BPSM as it is known today).
The Institute was represented at Bill’s funeral by our Chapter President, James Jones, and the CEO, David Parken, has written a letter to Bill’s family. We are currently gathering information about Bill to prepare an obituary for Architecture Australia, so if you have any information that may be helpful in this endeavour, please pass it on to myself or James Jones.
To honour the contribution of such an esteemed member of the profession, we are planning to hold a special forum during February and will advise members of the date as soon as it is confirmed.
Committees
Chapter Committees will begin to meet again in February. We currently have a number of vacancies on our Committees. If you would like to become more involved in the Chapter, let us know your area of interest and we will endeavour to place you on the relevant Committee. Express interest your interest here.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 2008
Context for the State Architect
Tasmanians embrace new household products, modern inventions, new motor vehicles and garments, electronic equipment and household goods without question, yet a mainstream appreciation and acceptance of contemporary architecture is at best skeptical. The worth of architecture and good design in Australia however has often been denied, unrecognized, devalued, and in some cases, derided. Other than for heritage or real estate value, what other value might one put on a building or a public space?
