From the National President

24 Feb

All of the results are now in for National Council elections.

Congratulations to Andrew Wilson, who has been elected the new ACT Chapter President, Peter Malatt, the new Victorian Chapter President, Richard Kirk, the new Qld Chapter President, Phillip Griffiths, the new WA Chapter President and Simon Scally, who has been re-elected in NT.

Congratulations also to Jon Clements and Ken Maher who have been elected as National Councillors.

The new Presidents and Councillors will be sworn in at National Council on 20 March, with Phillip Griffith assuming the WA Chapter Presidency at the AGM in May when David Karotkin steps up to the National Presidency.

In my capacity as National President, I have the privilege of chairing the committee for the National Architecture Conference – and I can tell you that Making 2014 (Perth, 8-10 May) is set to be a standout experience.

Last week we had confirmation that David Adjaye OBE will be speaking at the conference. David is Principal Architect of Adjaye Associates, and is one of the leading architects of his generation. Described as an architect with an artist’s sensibility, his ingenious use of materials and showcasing of light have defined his work since establishing his practice in 2000. Projects have been diverse in scale, audience, and geography and include numerous private houses, exhibitions and pavilions as well as major arts centres and important public buildings across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. These demonstrate his considered approach to understanding the needs of the constituency served by each building and a respect for their integration – culturally and architecturally – within the existing locale.

We are thrilled that David will be joining us in Perth, adding to the already impressive selection of distinguished speakers, including:

Elizabeth Watson Brown, Architectus, Brisbane
Andrew Burns, Andrew Burns Architects, Sydney
Richard Hassell, WOHA, Singapore
Timothy Horton, Adelaide
Wen Hsia and BC Ang, WHBC, Malaysia
Andra Matin, Indonesia
Gurjit Singh Matharoo, Matharoo Associates, India
Beth Miller, Community Design Collaborative, USA
Sek San Ng, Seksan Design, Malaysia
Vo Trong Nghia, Vo Trong Nghia Architects,Vietnam
Jo Noero, Noero Architects, South Africa
Marina Tabassum, MTA, Bangladesh
Emma Williamson, CODA, Perth
Cazu Zegers, Chile

Also, the Fringe program is shaping up to be a veritable festival of architecture. From bike tours to live music, exhibitions and films – there is a plethora of original and inspiring events to complement your conference experience.

I do encourage you to register soon as the 20% early bird discount ends on 6 March. Visit the Making site for all the details.

Also, a quick reminder that next month sees the Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards, which will be held at Peppermint Bay in Tasmania. Come and join us to celebrate the work of esteemed peers and colleagues. More information here.
