Residential Architecture - Houses (New)

Sinuous and sensuous, the curves and contours of this spectacular contemporary residence ensure the brilliance of the built space match the natural beauty of the setting. Created and completed as the architect’s personal acknowledgement of his links to the Tamar Valley and Tasmania.

A virtually transparent house sitting with coiled geometry watching the water from a position of peace and privacy.

Effectively two 125m2 buildings under one elongated 450m2, ninety tonne, green grass soil roof, the house is easily adaptable for family, holidays, or guests, the home has the scale and prestige of a local vineyard or nearby restaurant.

Likened to a planted forest, 250 gridded thin steel columns massed to their stiff welded joints, provide lateral bracing defying earthquakes and wind loads.

Channelling an ocean liner one continuous verandah surrounds the house, swelling outwards for glass protection from summer sun, contracting inwards to allow interior penetration of winter sun.

Client perspective:
“As the architect, builder and (former) owner of River Rocks and having been on AIA juries I know an old man’s vanity project when I see one… in defence, after four decades as a passionate architect I have realised that the ‘noise’ of project delivery can pollute clarity.
This project encompasses my energy and life force.

After thousands of work hours crafting the components like the hand made steel frame to hundreds of metres of surfaces, the project is a liveable sculpture. River Rocks disengages with an industry definition of professionalism and stands as an unsullied symbol of architecture’s power.”
