Project summary

Heritage

This project has breathed new life into one of Brisbane’s most iconic boom-era hotels formerly fondly known as the ‘Jube’ while equally creating, through its pavilion extension, a new type of pub experience – that of an ‘urban room’ in the city. The restoration was undertaken with heritage architect Ivan McDonald to Burra Charter principles as well as with great care by artisan tradespeople.

The expansion is contemporary both inside and out, enriching experience of place by diversity and preserving the iconic identity of the original hotel building. The project demonstrates how, through considered design, a pub from a bygone era can be extended, in both its external and internal fabric, to respond to contemporary urban lifestyles generating what is evidently immense public popularity.

Interior

This project brings back to life one of the Brisbane inner city’s most renowned historic hotels through its meticulous restoration and expansion into a beer garden pavilion.

The restoration was advised and overseen by heritage architect Ivan McDonald, while the beer garden pavilion was conceived and articulated as a new all—weather public space in the city, Seating booths are nestled by a sawtooth roof and diagrid glazed façade, both washing the space in daylight and varying through different conditions outside, with the space naturally ventilated.

Various levels and landscaped ledges are created using numerous patterns of masonry as a direct connection to the heritage building. These surfaces offer choice of experience and gathering settings, enhanced by interconnection not only with the restored hotel but the adjoining new office building.

JGL Properties could not be happier with the outcome of Jubilee by Blight Rayner. The intricate way that the office development, restored historic pub and its pavilion extension intertwine is stunning, with each component having its own integrity while enriching the whole.

Reviving one of Brisbane’s iconic pubs is also a joy to us, and Blight Rayner’s detailing of both old and new has been exceptional. We are so pleased to have made such a tangible contribution to the life of the city through Blight Rayner’s design, overcoming many physical challenges, and the project is a great commercial success.
