The refurbishment and additions to the heritage-listed Wesleyan Church at Albert Park Primary School by Searle x Waldron Architecture, aimed to maintain the heritage qualities of the church hall both internally and externally while enhancing its usability for the school. The project removed ad-hoc internal alterations from the 1980s to restore clarity to the original space and add amenities, teaching spaces, and additional functionality. The exterior amenities were designed to be recessive in scale and form while being carefully considered to complement the original church as an expressive addition. The design prioritized student experience and genuinely multi-use spaces and was completed on a constrained budget which necessitated the creative use of cost-effective materials. The project’s sensitive approach and economical budget resulted in a series of responsive and intimate additions that prioritize positive educational outcomes and generously replace old, inadequate facilities.
