Commendation – COLORBOND® Award for Steel Architecture 2023

COLORBOND® for Steel Architecture

The COLORBOND® Award for Steel Architecture honours exceptional architectural projects in Queensland that exemplify the innovative and creative use of steel as a design material. Presented in partnership with COLORBOND®, this award highlights projects that push the boundaries of steel in architecture, seamlessly blending functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic brilliance.

This category includes a diverse array of projects, from residential and commercial buildings to public and industrial spaces. Entries showcase the versatility and durability of steel, demonstrating its creative integration into the design while responding thoughtfully to Queensland’s distinctive climatic and environmental conditions.

This category recognises buildings in which steel products play a significant role in the architectural solution and which exemplify innovation in the use of steel products.

Use of BlueScope products, including COLORBOND®, is a criterion for selection or award. Jury consideration of entries in this category will include consultation with a nominated BlueScope representative at Chapter and National levels. This Award is not given at a Regional level. Engineering, infrastructure and other non-building projects are not eligible for this category.

THE WAREHOUSES | J.AR OFFICE

Jury citation

The Warehouses project repurposes five existing structures with skilful edits, fabric retention/removal, and sensitive use of colour and materials. Noticeable in the street for its clear yet restrained architecture, the building avoids the need for loud advertising. Large shop windows and an inviting entry open into an internal two-storey street filled with natural daylight, air, and landscape.

Excellent environmental credentials are complemented by the social aspirations of hosting community-focused events. The Warehouses project is a remarkable achievement that creates inspiring spaces for work and play.
