NSW Social Impact - Special Commendation

2025 Winners

Award – Syahmina Zulkepli

Syhmina presented a meaningful and thoughtfully resolved proposition that deeply engaged with the concept of connection to Country in her homeland in Malaysia. Her approach demonstrated clarity and maturity, offering a framework that other practitioners could adopt and adapt when exploring connections to Country in their own work.

The jury found her proposal not only successful but also rich with potential for further exploration. They felt the depth and rigor of her investigation could very well serve as the foundation for an ongoing doctoral thesis, highlighting its significance and academic merit.

Commendation – Tyler Smith and Miles Agius

The work of Miles and Tyler deserves commendation for its thoughtful engagement with Waremah and Goodmayes Orchard. Their project demonstrated a genuine commitment to sustainability, community, and deep listening to Country. By embracing a collective approach, their seasonal, community-driven proposition not only fostered strong local ties but also created a replicable framework that holds great potential for adoption by other practitioners as well as local and state governments.

Commendation – Sophia di Giandomenico

Play, Her Way… is a visionary exploration that confronts the present realities to imagine a future where female sport is prioritised and future-proofed. It envisions a world where emerging sports yet to be recognised find their place, where inter-generational mentorship thrives across athletes and communities, and where new relationships and dialogues form to strengthen and empower female sport.

Sophia is to be commended for the call to action, inviting us to rethink sport, space, and opportunity through the lens of equity and possibility.
