Impact

More than a decade of
donor-funded work.

Since its establishment in 2013, the Foundation has supported Australian architecture at home and on the international stage. Here is what that support has made possible.

Since 2006

The Venice Architecture Biennale.

The Venice Architecture Biennale is one of the most prestigious international architectural forums. Australia has held a permanent national pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale since 1988, and the Institute has commissioned Australia's contribution since 2006.

Through the generosity of donors, the Foundation has enabled the Institute to tell the story of Australian architecture at the Biennale, and to bring that story home to Australian audiences.

Bushfire Appeal and Architects Assist.

The 2019–20 bushfire crisis sparked two responses from the profession, both enabled by the Foundation.

In early 2020 the Institute launched a fundraising campaign through the Foundation for communities affected by the fires. In a single week of February 2020, architects donated a day's pay, raising more than $16,000 to support rural and regional communities as they rebuilt.

Sydney architecture graduate Jiri Lev launched Architects Assist, a website where architects could volunteer their services to people rebuilding in a more resilient way. The response was overwhelming, and the Institute was asked to take the program over. Over an initial six months, 600 practices provided pro bono services to disaster-affected communities. The program continued through 2021 and 2022 with support from Taubmans and a grant from the Australian Government.

Droga Architect in Residence.

For five years the Foundation ran a residency that brought a leading international architect to Australia to encourage new approaches, the exchange of ideas and international collaboration.

The program was made possible by the generosity of Daniel and Lyndell Droga, who offered their Surry Hills apartment for the residency. Architects in residence delivered public lectures at major cultural venues and universities and worked with postgraduate students across the country.
