Vui Choong named Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects

Vui Choong is recognised for his significant contribution to the architectural profession through international practice, leadership across complex project environments, and sustained service to the profession within the Asia–Pacific region.

With more than fifteen years of professional experience spanning Australia, Hong Kong SAR, mainland China and Japan, Vui Choong has established a career defined by cross-cultural practice and the delivery of complex architectural and infrastructure projects. A registered architect in Victoria and New South Wales, and an APEC Architect accredited through the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, he has demonstrated recognised professional standing across the Asia–Pacific region.

Throughout his career, Vui has contributed to a diverse portfolio including transport and public infrastructure, urban residential and mixed-use developments, and institutional and civic projects. Within leading international practices, he has held senior architectural and project leadership roles, contributing to design development, multidisciplinary coordination, and project delivery within highly complex regulatory and procurement environments.

His experience extends beyond project delivery to system-level contributions, including the authorship of architectural design standards for metro infrastructure in Shenzhen. This work established spatial and interface principles to guide future station development, demonstrating his capacity to influence architecture at both project and urban scales.

Since 2023, Vui has led his own architectural practice in Japan, undertaking full professional responsibility across all project stages, including design, statutory approvals, consultant coordination, and delivery. This transition to independent practice reflects a continued commitment to design excellence and a capacity to operate across diverse international contexts.

Complementing his professional practice, Vui has made a sustained contribution to the profession through long-standing involvement with the Australian Institute of Architects. He has served as an elected Councillor of the International Chapter since 2015, contributing nearly a decade of governance service and supporting member engagement, strategic direction, and the representation of Australian architects working abroad.

In 2021, Vui served as Jury Chair for the International Chapter Awards for Architecture, contributing to the recognition of professional excellence. He has also supported the organisation of professional events in Hong Kong, strengthening connections between Australian practitioners and regional networks. Beyond the Institute, he has contributed as a design critic at the University of Hong Kong and participated in professional forums through the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design, reinforcing his commitment to education and broader disciplinary discourse.

Through his international practice, institutional service, and cross-cultural engagement, Vui Choong has demonstrated an enduring commitment to advancing architectural practice and professional standards. His work reflects the global reach of Australian architecture and its capacity to operate meaningfully across diverse cultural and regulatory contexts.
