The Australian Institute of Architects is deeply saddened by the passing of Fellow Peter Moeck FRAIA, who died on Sunday 28 June, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family.
For more than four decades, Peter dedicated his life to architecture and to the communities his work served. A Registered Architect in South Australia and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects since 2004, Peter built a career distinguished not only by design excellence, but by generosity, humility and enduring relationships.
After graduating from the University of Adelaide in 1984, Peter worked with Paul Campbell & Associates before joining Rick Bzowy Architects and later Brown Falconer, where he was a Director for 16 years. In 2012 he established Peter Moeck Architect, continuing to practise independently until just days before his passing.
Peter believed that architecture should always be about people. His philosophy was grounded in careful listening, collaboration and an understanding that successful buildings respond to their context while strengthening the communities they serve.Â
He was particularly passionate about educational architecture, believing that thoughtfully designed learning environments could enrich literacy, collaboration and lifelong learning.Â
His influence extended far beyond his own projects. Peter chaired the South Australian Chapter of Learning Environments Australasia, served on the Architectural Practice Board of South Australia, facilitated professional learning programs, mentored countless emerging architects and contributed as a juror for architectural awards. Colleagues, students and former mentees have all spoken of his generosity, patience and willingness to share his knowledge.
Peter’s work received widespread recognition throughout his career. Among many honours, he was awarded the inaugural Robert Denyer Cheesman Award for Best Practice in Architecture in 2013, recognising his commitment to long-term client relationships founded on trust, respect and collaboration. His projects also received numerous Australian Institute of Architects awards spanning public architecture, education, conservation, interior architecture, collaborative design and steel architecture.

These projects reflect Peter’s enduring commitment to architecture that enriches civic life, strengthens communities and creates places of belonging. The Mount Gambier Library, which Peter described as the highlight of his career, remains an outstanding example of architecture that transformed a regional city into a vibrant learning community.
Away from practice, Peter was devoted to his family. Born in Adelaide to German migrants Hermann and Ursula Moeck, he is survived by his beloved wife Lucinda, daughters Alex and Ella, and their families.
Peter remained committed to architecture throughout his illness. One of the last architects of his generation to continue producing hand-drawn documentation, he was still working at his drawing board only days before his death, a reflection of the passion, craftsmanship and dedication that defined his career.
Peter Moeck’s contribution to architecture will endure through the buildings he created, the architects he mentored and the communities whose lives were enriched through his work.
The South Australian Chapter extends its sincere condolences to Lucinda, Alex and her partner Patrick, Ella and her wife Stefanie, and his adored grandchildren Willow and Kasper.

A memorial service celebrating Peter’s life will be held on Monday 20 July 2026 at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Glenelg – one of Peter’s own architectural projects.
