The full program for Open House Hobart 2025 will be officially launched at an event to be held at the Hobart Town Hall on Monday 6 October, on World Architecture Day.
Tasmania’s most popular architecture and design event, Open House Hobart, is back in 2025 for its 13th program on the weekend of November 8 & 9, taking in the best of Hobart’s built environment.
Open House Southern Midlands will be held for the first time, on the weekend of November 1 & 2, to explore heritage and more.
The full 2025 program and website for Open House Hobart and Open House Southern Midlands will go live on the Open House Hobart website at 6 pm, Monday 6 October, to coincide with World Architecture Day. This year’s program will run over two weekends, with a series of events surrounding this. With over 100 buildings, activities, walking tours and open practices around nipaluna/Hobart and beyond for Open House Hobart, and almost 50 buildings, activities and walking tours included in the Open House Southern Midlands program, there’s so much to explore.
The event is free, and most buildings don’t require bookings – all you need to do is check out the listing on the website, and the opening times, and just turn up! For the few that do require bookings, in true Tassie style, it’s first in, best dressed! Bookings open at 10 am, Wednesday 8 October, and can be made at openhousehobart.org/hobart/.
This year also features ‘Open Practice’, taking place over the week between Open House Southern Midlands and Open House Hobart, where the public are invited inside Hobart’s architecture studios to informally connect with an architect and learn more about the design process. Participating practices include Cumulus Studio, MANA, AKA Architects, Dock4, Maguire Devine, Room 11, and XSquared Architects – check the website for the full list and their locations!
Organised and run by the Tasmanian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, Open House Hobart and Open House Southern Midlands is the local version of a global event first held in London in 1992 and now staged in more than 60 cities around the world. It gives visitors the chance to see how others live, work and play; look up, look inside, have a sticky-beak, and see the city from a different angle.
Tasmanian President of the Australian Institute of Architects, Daniel Lane, says, “architecture and design is all around us, and for everyone. The Open House program allows first-hand access to these spaces, to learn more about the buildings and the place.”
Jennifer Nichols, Open House Hobart co-producer, says that “more than just opening buildings, Open House will tell the stories of those who lived, worked and played in these spaces and places, and how they continue to tell the stories of the current custodians.”
“Architecture and good design are the cornerstones of healthy, safe and sustainable places to live, work and play,” says Nichols. “The alternative is bleak; a world without good design lacks functionality, social cohesion, environmental sustainability, amenity and delight. Open House makes our cities and towns more accessible, more open and ultimately more equitable for all. Open House gives the opportunity for everyone to learn about the value of good design and experience those spaces first hand. An informed public conversation enables meaningful dialogue about the future of our towns and cities, the values we want to retain, those we don’t and the aspirations we have for the future of our built environment.”
Open House Hobart is supported by the City of Hobart. Open House Southern Midlands received funding from the Tasmanian Government’s Built Heritage Grants and is supported by the Southern Midlands Council. Both Open House Hobart and Open House Southern Midlands is also made possible through the generous support of our sponsors and partners. Major Partners: Tasmanian Government and Futago; Partners: Austral Bricks, Lysaght & The Agency; Media Partner: ArchitectureAU.
