New SA Chapter President announced for Institute of Architects

Anthony Coupe

The SA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects is pleased to announce its new President, Anthony Coupe, director of Mulloway Studio. The appointment follows the move by previous President Tony Giannone to a national role at the Institute as 2020 National President Elect.

Anthony Coupe has served as a Chapter Councilor for nearly 5 years and has been involved in broader aspects of the profession including teaching, mentoring and design research. Anthony has an ongoing interest in promoting investment in design and the consolidation of a strong design culture in South Australia.

Mulloway Studio is an Adelaide based design practice and works across a number of areas specialising in placemaking and gallery design and received the Institute’s 2019 named Award for Urban Design for Willunga Mainstreet, the 2017 named Award for Heritage for Lounder’s Boathouse and in 2018 its work on Harts Mill, Port Adelaide received an award from UNESCO for New Design in Heritage Contexts. Mulloway’s proposal for new war memorials in Canberra featured in the 2014 International Architecture Biennale in Venice.

Mr Giannone welcomed Anthony as the new President saying that his appointment provided continuity; “his participation on Council has seen the Institute continue to provide advocacy and strategic vision while supporting day-to-day practice, and we have great confidence in his ability to underline the significant gains the SA Chapter has made.”

Anthony is interested in supporting opportunities for collaboration and pursuing new forms of practice, and continuing to strengthen communication between government, education, the general community, other industry bodies and Institute members.

As a former Executive Member and National Vice President of Australia ICOMOS, Anthony is familiar with the management of, and opportunities within, professional bodies and was instrumental in several key projects including the updated Burra Charter 2013. He has worked in a volunteer capacity on community development projects in Mexico and Laos.

Anthony retains strong connections with architectural education and is a regular studio leader, and tutor at both Adelaide University and the University of South Australia and is undertaking a PhD by practice.
