Message from your new Queensland Chapter President, Peter Gardiner

As we reflect on 2025, I want to acknowledge the extraordinary commitment of our members, volunteers, committees and staff across Queensland. It has been a year of significant challenge and opportunity for our profession, and I am proud of the way architects have continued to lead with intelligence, creativity and generosity in every part of the state.

This year has reinforced the importance of strong advocacy. From housing and planning reform to design quality, climate resilience and the long-term shape of our communities, architects have an essential role to play in public conversation and decision-making. Our task as an Institute is to keep championing that role clearly, confidently and consistently and to ensure the value of good design is understood not only within our profession, but by government, industry and the broader community.

Looking ahead, our focus must be on building momentum – and doing so together. A stronger profession is one that is united across regions, practice types and career stages; one that supports emerging voices while drawing on the experience of those who have led before us.

It is also a profession that remains outward-looking: engaged with communities, responsive to change, and willing to collaborate across disciplines to deliver better outcomes.

In 2026, as Queensland Chapter President, I am committed to continuing this work: strengthening our advocacy, lifting the profile of the profession, and ensuring the Institute remains a trusted and influential voice for architecture in Queensland. We will continue to speak up for design excellence, for thoughtful growth, and for the vital contribution architects make to the cultural, social and economic life of our state.

If we work with purpose and unity, we can shape not only a stronger profession, but a better future for Queensland.
