We wanted to update you on what has been happening in the Chapter over the last few months and to update you on what we’ve been working on. This includes the advocacy work as well as the 2023 NT Awards, the launch of the inaugural Lecture series and other upcoming events over the next few months throughout the NT.
We have had a very busy year so far on the advocacy front and we have a lot of changes coming up. As you are aware we have been advocating for modernisation and changes to the Architects Act which has not been updated since 1968. We have been informed by the Attorney General Minister Paech that the changes will be introduced this year. The recommendations are the implementation of a code of conduct, compulsory insurance for Architects and the introduction of compulsory CPD. The Introduction of compulsory CPD will bring us inline with other jurisdictions across Australia and ensure there is best practice and education for Architects and provide certainty to consumers. These changes are also in line with the recommendations from the Building Confidence report (Shergold- Weir, 2018) and critical in ensuring there is mutual recognition for registered architects across Australia.
As of the 1st of October 2023, Section J 2019 and the ABCB Liveable Housing Design Guidelines will be implemented. As part of this we are putting together workshops to ensure everyone is up to date before the implementation date. It would also be good to have some specific case studies that relate to our environment so please feel free to contact us if you would like to be part of that.
We are continuing to work on the Remote Housing Project with several designs reviewed to provide feedback. The most important part is the meeting with the NT Indigenous Housing Association and we look forward to working with them on real change and directions. We have also recently provided extensive feedback to the department on the Draft for the designing homes for the Top End Climate.
Another key area we are working with the department is procurement. I know this is a big discussion point for all our NT members. We are currently working on a survey to all local members in regard to this as well as putting together a survey to the department. The vision for this is to have clear quantifiable data as well as qualitative feedback to clearly understand all the issues and not just rely on hearsay. With real data we can make clear recommendations for change. I have also been working through other jurisdictions tendering and procurement guidelines with the national policy team so that if there is best practice that can show legislative precedence on then we can use this as part of the recommendations. It is critical that as many members as possible complete this when it is circulated so watch this space.
Recently the national team have circulated a Diversity and Inclusion Survey for you to complete. This survey is being conducted to gain feedback from the entire architectural community with the results helping the Institute to develop our policy. The purpose is to improving the health and well-being of all who live and work in our diverse communities by promoting quality, responsible, sustainable design and advocating on behalf of the profession for the benefit of all Australians. Please click here to complete the survey https://research.surveymatters.com.au/n/Jlwcpv8.
Below are the events we have scheduled and I will be putting these directly in your calendars to ensure you are kept informed. Please register for the events so we can ensure a large enough venue and that we cater appropriately.

2023 NT LECTURE SERIES FEATURING MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN
The Institute of Architects NT Chapter is proud to announce the inaugural NT Annual Lecture Series which features high profile international architects to present across a wide range of topical issues. This free event for Institute members and costing $10 for other professionals across the built environment and the general public focuses on a wide conversation about the impact of architecture in the community.
Event Background
New Zealand faces some of the same challenges as the Northern Territory, especially as the NT’s first nations represent 30.8% of their population, which is higher than the Australian average at 3.8%. The NZ’s first nation average is 17.8% of their population, so there is a much clearer understanding the engagement and immersion of indigenous culture in everyday lives and throughout the design process.
New Zealand is also struggling with climate change, witnessing recent extreme weather events and natural disasters. These events have increased over the past six years, both in NZ and the NT, with cyclones bouncing off the Australian coast and hitting the nation as well as being a tectonically active zone.
The presentation will feature the links with community and the importance of first nations in the successful delivery of projects and the need to involve the whole community throughout the design process. An NT example of what doesn’t work is in housing for first nations with dwellings ‘given to them’ with engagement not being holistic and, in some cases, tokenistic with negative outcomes which come from limited engagement.
Michael O’Sullivan’s experience working with first nations as an architect who clearly has a strong commitment working closely with Maori people is a critical lesson we can learn from. His work around respecting faith – whether western traditional religions that we understand and the importance of first nations heritage and storytelling – is another part of the presentation which is important in engaging with indigenous people. Maori and first nations cultures are complex and integrated into everyday life – whether it is through education, health, art, food, and storytelling. As well as having the public lecture we will also be hosting a mentoring session meet and greet with SONA and EmAGN.
