The 2026 Queensland Architecture Awards bring together an extraordinary range of projects from across the state. Viewed collectively, they also provide an opportunity to reflect on how architects are responding to the needs of people, places and a changing Queensland.Â
The Queensland Architecture Awards celebrate outstanding projects, people and practices. Once the ceremonies are over and the certificates have been presented, there is also value in returning to the work itself and considering what, collectively, it reveals about architecture in Queensland today.Â
Our new 2026 Queensland Architecture Awards digital book brings this year’s awarded and commended projects together in one place, spanning metropolitan, regional and remote Queensland.Â
Across its pages are projects responding in very different ways to climate, context, culture and community, alongside the practical challenges of creating buildings and places that need to perform well now and into the future.Â
Look across the collection and some interesting threads begin to appear.Â
There are projects that create public value beyond their immediate brief. Others respond particularly closely to Queensland’s climate and landscape. Community, cultural identity and connection to Country are evident in different ways. Sustainability is increasingly integrated into broader design decisions, while existing buildings are being adapted and reconsidered for new purposes. Regional and remote projects respond to circumstances quite different from those encountered in our major centres.Â
Perhaps most interestingly, many of the projects demonstrate how architecture brings different considerations together: function, climate, culture, technical requirements, experience, landscape, community and long-term use.Â
It offers another way of looking at the Awards.Â
Not simply project by project or category by category, but as a collective picture of architectural practice in Queensland at a particular point in time.Â
Over the remaining newsletters this year, we will return to the Awards book through a new series, Queensland Architecture, Considered. Each story will explore a theme evident across the projects and reflect on the different ways architects are responding to people, place and the evolving demands of the built environment.Â
We hope you will explore the digital book, revisit projects you may already know and discover some you do not.Â
And perhaps, as you move through the collection, consider another question:Â
What does the architecture being created across Queensland today reveal about the places we are becoming?Â
Why an architect?Â
Architects work across many dimensions of a project at once, bringing together people, place, climate, function, culture, technical requirements and long-term thinking to develop a considered built response.Â
