The Australian Institute of Architects welcomes the release of the Australian Building Codes Board’s Embodied Carbon Handbook.
Developed in collaboration with NABERS, the handbook establishes a nationally consistent framework for measuring, disclosing and improving embodied carbon performance over time as an important step in Australia’s pathway to net zero buildings.
When measurement systems are duplicated or applied inconsistently, the productivity impacts compound across projects, clients, procurement processes and government policy. Different methodologies create friction between clients, consultants, contractors, supply chain and government agencies.
However, a consistent national approach allows effort to be directed towards improving productivity and low carbon outcomes rather than wasted effort in interpreting requirements. National consistency creates a productivity ecosystem where carbon data, knowledge and innovation can move more effectively through supply chains and continue to deliver value across the life of buildings.
The Institute has long advocated for transparent carbon disclosure and the integration of NABERS-based measurement frameworks through our Architecture Industry Decarbonisation Plan.
We see the ABCB’s guidance as laying the foundations for future policy, market transparency and carbon reduction across the built environment. Importantly, it also helps drive productivity and innovation whilst concurrently building the industry capability needed to support future carbon targets and accelerate the transition to low-carbon buildings.
