As we begin 2026, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to our members, partners and broader architectural community across South Australia. I hope the year ahead brings renewed energy, opportunity and optimism—both professionally and personally.
The past year has been one of significant transition for the Australian Institute of Architects. Throughout 2025, the Institute undertook substantial structural and operational changes. While change is never easy, these reforms were necessary and deliberate, designed to strengthen the organisation and ensure it continues to deliver meaningful value to members—now and well into the future. Importantly, these changes position the Institute to be more responsive, resilient and effective in representing the profession in a rapidly evolving built environment landscape.
At the heart of this work is a strong and enduring commitment to our values. We remain focused on one community, embracing diversity and fostering open, respectful communication. We continue to pursue innovation, demonstrating leadership with courage and creativity. We are guided by accountability, acting with integrity, responsibility and sustainability. Respect underpins how we work together, recognising effort and engaging with empathy. And through collaboration, built on trust and transparency, we amplify our collective impact.
These values inform our focus on the priorities that matter most to members. In 2026, the SA Chapter will continue to invest in strong policy and advocacy, education and professional development, and programs that support students, emerging architects and distinguished members. We remain committed to fostering meaningful engagement across small, medium and large practices, and to delivering the Institute’s flagship professional and celebratory events—including the National Conference, and the much-valued and greatly anticipated state and national awards programmes—which together showcase excellence, leadership and innovation across the profession.
2026 also promises to be a pivotal year for South Australia. With the State Election scheduled for 21 March, the SA Chapter will continue to engage constructively with government, opposition and key stakeholders. We will actively promote the Institute’s built environment policy statements, addressing issues that directly impact our members and the communities they serve. In parallel, we will continue to collaborate with other peak bodies to align advocacy efforts and amplify our collective voice on shared priorities.
I would also like to acknowledge and sincerely thank the many member volunteers who contribute their time, knowledge and experience across SA Chapter committees, working groups and taskforces. Your commitment plays a critical role in guiding the Chapter’s direction, strengthening our advocacy, shaping our programs and supporting the profession more broadly. The Institute’s impact is only possible because of this generosity and leadership.
On a personal note, I am both honoured and energised to continue in the role of Interim Executive Leader (SA). I look forward to maintaining a strong focus on SA Chapter priorities, representing the interests of our members, and working closely with Council, committees, staff and partners to deliver positive outcomes for the profession and the broader community.
The Australian Institute of Architects and its members are dedicated to raising the quality of the built environment for people and advancing architecture as a profession. We seek to improve the enduring health and wellbeing of all Australians and our diverse communities. The design of the built environment shapes the places where we live, work and meet, influencing how our cities function, how our economy performs, and how our environment is sustained.
Australian architects have a global reputation for innovative design leadership. Our profession is well placed to support governments at all levels with expert advice on addressing the complex challenges facing our towns and cities. Advocacy and public policy engagement remain core activities of the Institute, undertaken at state, territory and national levels, ensuring the profession speaks with a clear, consistent and authoritative voice.
I look forward to working with you throughout 2026 as we continue to strengthen the Institute, advocate for quality design, and champion the value of architecture for South Australia and beyond.
