2024 Gold Medal A.S. Hook Address with Philip Thalis

The Gold Medal is the Australian Institute of Architects’ highest honour. It recognises architects who have provided distinguished service by designing or executing buildings of exceptional merit, producing work that significantly advances architecture, or contributing to the profession in an exemplary manner. This year the Gold Medal was awarded to Philip Thalis LFRAIA, founding principal of Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects.

Philip is widely regarded as a visionary architect who harnesses his deep architectural knowledge as a catalyst for change and a force for good within our cities and suburbs. He has been described as a role model for the architect as a public intellectual, influencing not only the built environment but also public discourse around urban development. His work is characterised by a commitment to public spaces, a deep understanding of urban design, and a dedication to the social and cultural fabric of our communities. His contributions to the field extend beyond his architectural projects; he is also a prominent advocate for sustainable and equitable urban planning.

On Thursday, 26 September, Philip delivered the AS Hook Address in his home state of NSW in front of an audience of over 400 guests, who had all braved Sydney’s wild weather in order to attend. From inside the UNSW auditorium, Philip addressed past Gold Medallists and Chapter Presidents, the Honourable Lord Mayor, friends and family, colleagues, peers, and students, sharing highlights and lessons from his many years in practice along with his vision for the future of architecture.

From his unique perspective within the fields of architecture, policy, advocacy, and education, Philip presented work that was deeply entrenched in place making, and the role of design in forming cities and communities that are underpinned by equality and accessibility. From transportation infrastructure and affordable housing, to reclaiming public space and navigating the court of public opinion, Philip’s address traversed the tapestry of Sydney’s built and political environment, and left us all with the desire to become architects of not just buildings, but of the future of NSW.
