2022 National Architecture Awards shortlist revealed

Eighty-five entries spanning private homes, high-profile public architecture and contemporary infrastructure have been shortlisted for the prestigious Australian Institute of Architects’ 2022 National Architecture Awards.

The National Awards celebrate the diversity and quality of the nation’s built environment professionals. Entrants for the National Architecture Awards are existing regional or state and territory award-winners.

National Awards Jury Chair Tony Giannone LFRAIA, said the 85 entries across 72 projects demonstrated the high calibre of Australia’s architects. He said the works demonstrated the connection of the built environment to the landscape.

“In the public domain, it was pleasing to observe the increasing significance of buildings with a public ethos,” he said. “Many presentations highlighted the relationship of the building to its community rather than the architecture. The jury was heartened by this return to social values and the importance of the architect in society.”

Mr Giannone congratulated all entrants for their work, acknowledging the efforts and achievements of the architects in their regions.

“The jury congratulates all the entrants for putting forward their work and advocating for design integrity in the Australian landscape,” he said. “The presentations and the storytelling were passionate, truly capturing the spirit of Australian architecture.”

The 2022 awards program attracted hundreds of entrants, with 184 entries eligible for the National Awards. A comprehensive judging process determines the shortlisted and winning entries.

The projects include buildings from all over the country, including regional areas. The jury travelled 12,000km over 12 days, visiting 67 projects across Australia.

The National Architecture Awards jury comprised:

  • Tony Giannone LFRAIA (Chair), Immediate Past National President of the Australian Institute of Architects, Director at Tectvs Pty Ltd
  • Caroline Pidcock LFRAIA, Director at Pidcock Architecture + Sustainability
  • Adrian Iredale RAIA, Director at Iredale Pederson Hook
  • Poppy Taylor RAIA, Director at Taylor and Hinds Architects
  • Tim Ross, Director at Modernister Films.

The Australian Institute of Architects’ 2022 National Architecture Awards will be revealed on 3 November at an event at the Taronga Zoo, Sydney.
