Project summary

The Round is the new cultural hub for the Whitehorse community. Welcoming and inspiring, it is a place for both the everyday and special event; both a premiere performance and events facility, and base for a diverse range of local community and business groups, artists, performers and patrons alike.

For Millennia this place has been recognised and used as ceremonial ground, for the convergence of many. Whitehorse, Nunawading or Namenarren – it is a place of many names and myriad stories.

A building in the round its curvaceous perimeter creates a series of opportunities for place-making and community programming. Five Faces, Five Places. Unified through brick, some big, some small, each forges a robust, enduring and proudly civic presence responsive to its immediate context.

A whole of site strategy the new precinct integrates architecture, landscape, ecology and infrastructure towards a new and engaging model for a suburban civic centre.

COLORBOND® Award for Steel Architecture – Commendation

BKK + Kerstin Thompson have worked hard to transform a beloved institution, succeeding on a number of complex briefed fronts while creating a community asset that feels generous and warm.

The building flows from one space to the other in an easy manner, and the public realm creates an urban dialogue that feels genuinely connected to its suburban context. The architectural collaboration is unified here, a true melding of thoughtful design moves to create a flexible civic asset.

Commendation for Public Architecture

The Round has a dignified civic presence with its high level of architectural virtuosity and built craftsmanship in becoming a new cultural hub for the Whitehorse community. Engaging thoroughly with local Indigenous connections and histories, this sophisticated building with its diverse program seamlessly integrates landscape, ecology, sustainability, and infrastructure to become a premier event and performance facility.

Design of The Round has informed every element of building’s function. From our brand identity and goals to our operational efficiency and service.

The Round has been designed to sit within and add to our community with its many faces welcoming those that use the parkland and residential precinct. It’s curved designed is inviting and alludes to the full circle community activation of space at the heart of any great infrastructure project. This design informed the building name and brand.

The Round’s operational and technical design also allows for a world class performing arts experience for patrons, staff and performers.
