The site is positioned on a ridgeline formed by the lava flow of the extinct Wollumbin Volcano and has expansive coastal views to the east. This residence was designed for a couple relocating from Sydney’s Northern Beaches who wanted to continue to enjoy their coastal lifestyle in a more enhanced and comfortable way.
The building’s boomerang-shaped plan enables the services to face the road and be shaded from the western sun whilst the more public areas fan out into the treetops. The upper level includes the main living areas, an elevated therapeutic pool, and sweeping views of the coast below. The residents primarily live on the self-contained upper level and can utilise the lower level as necessary.
The high bushfire risk necessitated the use of robust, resistant materials. The concrete blockwork solidly grounds the building on the site, and the charcoal colour palette blends into the surrounding weathered gums.
