The Red Shed stands as a testament to Jega’s vision of a world-class, inclusive rowing facility. Designed with a philanthropic ethos, the new facility on Lake Burley Griffin’s western shore accommodates diverse programs from school and Indigenous initiatives to disability and wellness groups.
Balancing budget constraints and challenging site conditions, AMC’s architectural response achieves optimal functionality within a distinctive built form that sits comfortably within its natural context. The lower level houses essential boat storage and recovery spaces, while the upper club level features a public café, gym and multi-purpose hall. Featuring a sculptural white roof (reminiscent of a rowing hull) which wraps around the building, extensive glazing to maximise views across the Lake and natural materials that take their cue from the Black Mountain Naure Reserve, the Red Shed is fully accessible and a striking addition to Canberra’s sporting landscape.
We are incredibly proud of what AMC has achieved with Red Shed—a facility that truly embodies our mission to enable rowing for all, inspire wellness, and foster community. Their thoughtful design has created a purpose-built rowing hub that integrates seamlessly with high-performance training spaces, a welcoming community café, and adaptable areas for indoor training and events. The balance of durability, warmth, and accessibility elevates every experience within these walls. Excellence in design breeds excellence in performance, and thanks to AMC’s vision, Red Shed stands as a benchmark for sports and wellness architecture, driving connection, achievement, and inclusivity.
