The Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp delivers a vital, step-free connection between Sydney’s central city and North Sydney.Â
The 185-metre ramp removes the previous barrier of 55 steps, making cycling safer, more accessible, and convenient for commuters, recreational riders, and visitors alike.
The ramp is the result of decades of advocacy and careful planning, combining innovative engineering with traditional craftsmanship. A bronze balustrade, inspired by a woven ribbon, complements the bridge’s heritage while adding a contemporary touch. Its gently curving design minimises impact on surrounding public spaces, preserving Bradfield Park and the station forecourt, while a relocated section of the original 1932 parapet connects past and present for the community.
Beyond cycling, the project includes upgraded footpaths, crossings, a plaza with seating, water, and bike-repair facilities, and a public artwork celebrating local Indigenous heritage. This new infrastructure is a transformative public asset, enhancing connectivity, inclusivity, and enjoyment across Sydney Harbour.
The success of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway is a result of close collaboration between expert industry-leading design specialists in architecture, urban design; industrial and structural professionals and Transport for NSW, underpinned by a Design Excellence Strategy developed by Transport with input from the Government Architect and Heritage NSW. Â
Combined with extensive stakeholder, user and community testing and engagement, the collaborative design process resulted in an outstanding example of civic infrastructure that is elegant, sculptural, site responsive, celebrates Country, and enables everyone, regardless of age, ability or gender, to comfortably access and experience the Sydney Harbour Bridge and its surrounds.
