The Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre at Randwick reimagines paediatric healthcare as a place of healing, discovery and connection. Designed by Billard Leece Partnership for the NSW Government, the project integrates world-class clinical care, research and education within a highly human-centred environment that puts children and families first. An Australian first, the co-location of research laboratories with clinical spaces enables a seamless bench-to-bedside model, accelerating translation into patient care.
Interior architecture plays a critical role. Conceived as a home away from home, the interiors prioritise emotional wellbeing alongside clinical performance. Single-patient rooms are designed as personal spaces, with family zones, natural light and views to landscape supporting dignity and comfort. Public and clinical areas are intuitive, using colour, texture and artwork to assist wayfinding and reduce anxiety, creating a nurturing environment that supports trust, recovery and care.
“Our new 12 storey hospital building reflects the voices of hundreds of families and staff who helped shape its design. Its vibrant, welcoming spaces bring clinical and non-clinical areas together, strengthening how we care for children and young people from across NSW. Purpose built family areas – places to play, rest, cook a meal or take a quiet moment to reset – support parents and carers through their most challenging moments. The building’s thoughtful layout enhances clinical flow, improves collaboration and creates a calmer, more intuitive experience. We are grateful to BLP Architects for delivering a building that truly serves our community.”
