The new amenities building at Shelly Beach enhances a cherished gathering point along the Northern Beaches coastal walk, within Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve. The design revitalises a once dilapidated facility, increasing its functionality while preserving the iconic beauty of Shelly Beach.
The buidling is designed to serve the diverse needs of its many users — divers, oceanswimmers, beachgoers, surfers, café patrons, dog walkers, joggers — while also acting as a social hub.
Internal program includes male and female amenities, accessible WC/shower and family change. A raised central platform hosts a communal handwash basin, external showers, footwash taps with seating around the edge, creating a kind of urban theatre, activating the coastal walk and pairing harmoniously with the kiosk.
The structure is carefully positioned to preserve existing palm trees, with timber-clad sculptural roof forms allowing the building to signal its public purpose and to blend into its natural setting over time.
