The Sheep Chute House is a modest family home in Kangaroo Valley, NSW, that reinterprets rural building traditions through a contemporary lens. Designed by architect Wesley Hindmarch of Local Architect South Coast , the 141-square-metre home draws inspiration from the practical forms of farm sheds and sheep chutes, creating a sculptural structure that bridges paddock and forest. Prioritising sustainability and building only what you need , the design features 15KW solar power, passive heating and cooling, demonstrating that quality and environmental responsibility can coexist within a modest footprint.
Its angular form and restrained palette reflect a deep respect for landscape, culture, and heritage, offering a fresh model for regional living that is both grounded and forward-thinking. More than a private residence, the Sheep Chute House embodies a philosophy of living lightly, building sustainably, and celebrating the character of place, serving as a cultural contribution to the architectural identity of Kangaroo Valley.
“We wanted a home that felt connected to the land rather than dominating it. Inspired by the simple honesty of farm structures, the design reflects the practical beauty of the valley’s rural history. Building modestly allowed us to focus on quality, sustainability, and creating a space that truly feels like us—a light-filled pavilion between paddock and bush. Solar power, recycled materials, and additional insulation make the house efficient and future-proof, while its form speaks to tradition in a contemporary way. It’s more than a house; it’s a place deeply tied to community, landscape, and how we want to live.”
