Media summary

Meeting the needs of a growing school community on a tight, inner-suburban site while providing increased access to green space and outdoor play is always a challenge. Yet this is exactly what has been achieved in this exciting transformation of Rosary School in Prospect.

The first-of-its-kind vertical primary school in South Australia, this visionary development accommodates learning areas, music room and outdoor learning across three levels. The greening of the campus includes a significant increase in tree canopy and a diverse range of play opportunities.

The scale of the building is cleverly broken down to nestle into its residential neighbourhood, with whimsical design elements and vibrant pops of colour delighting the young occupants. Standing proud at the centre of the campus, an external lift well draws views upwards, inviting contemplation and reflection in the Dominican tradition.

Rosary School appointed Grieve Gillett Architects in August 2021 to create a master plan for improved teaching, learning, and play spaces. The architects carefully listened to the school’s needs, appreciating its history and integrating storytelling into the design. They provided innovative solutions that exceeded expectations. The building was designed with a strong focus on the environment, local culture, and community needs, ensuring both functionality and aesthetic appeal. It not only meets educational requirements but also fosters a sense of belonging and pride among students, staff, and families, making it a valuable addition to the school and wider community.
