The Princes Hill Residence is a rare example of Melbourne’s early 20th-century art deco architecture, representing a bold attempt at high-density living in a traditionally low-rise area. Though not officially heritage-listed, it’s a significant piece of the city’s architectural evolution. The design team, Freadman White and Flack Studio, carefully balanced the building’s historic character with modern needs, ensuring the home could accommodate multi-generational living. Extensive internal reworking created a cohesive flow between spaces. Externally, the original form was preserved, with thoughtful updates such as a translucent plexiglass wrap around the external stair, maintaining heritage while providing privacy. Subtle adjustments to the rear facade and added vertical space improved natural light and views, strengthening the connection to the garden. The project exemplifies adaptive reuse, preserving the past while embracing future functionality.
We are thrilled with our home, designed by Freadman White and Flack Studio. They expertly transformed two Art Deco apartments into a cohesive family home, preserving the building’s character while reinterpreting it for modern living. The space feels contemporary yet retains the elegance of its original era. A perfect example is the enclosed stair at the front, which allows light and greenery to filter through, creating a connection to the outdoors.
Freadman White and Flack Studio have given us a timeless home that is uniquely ours. We are incredibly grateful for their creativity, professionalism, and dedication
