Ngarrindjeri
South Australia
This project, emerging from a large-scale masterplan, comprises a new shelter structure, a new (replacement) wharf, and associated (landscape) works. From a design perspective it is concerned with the interface between architecture and engineering and the interface between land and water.Â
Set against the backdrop of a developing rural city, cultural tourism and recreation play a significant part in that planning. The river defines the character of the place and engagement with it is fundamental. Paddle steamers and other historic vessels have continued to operate from this location and form the core activity in this part of the reserve. The new work consolidates the infrastructure for this activity and adds a layer of new opportunities as well as elevating the awareness of the Ngarrindjeri and European cultural heritage of the place. It provides a platform for multiple ways to engage with the water.Â
Rural City of Murray Bridge is transforming Sturt Reserve into a vibrant, accessible riverfront destination. The Shelter and Lower Timber Wharf celebrate living Ngarrindjeri culture and the history of the area as a working wharf. The fully accessible design welcomes all, and they arrive By foot, wheels, kayak, or boat; locals and visitors are relaxing, taking photos, enjoying the river, and tossing a line. The design is not only functional, it’s locally relevant, and enhances, without overwhelming the natural beauty of the iconic Murray River, delivering on Council’s vision to grow tourism, boost the economy and enhance quality of life.
