Metoreia Urban Health Centre: A Landmark Healthcare Facility in Port Moresby

The Metoreia Urban Health Centre, a state-of-the-art Level 3 hospital, is now operational in Hanuabada, serving over 60,000 residents from surrounding communities. Delivered through a collaboration between the Australian Government, Motu Koita Assembly, United Church, and PNG health authorities, the facility enhances healthcare access, particularly for maternal services, with the capacity to deliver 1,000 babies annually.

Architecturally, the U-shaped 1,800m² facility integrates traditional Haus Tambaran-inspired design with modern functionality. High dormer gable roofs, clearstory windows, ornate support posts, and vibrant color schemes create welcoming yet practical environment. Named after Motu Koitabu medical pioneers Dr. Toua Ako and Nurse Kori Mauri, the hospital’s wings surround a landscaped courtyard, providing space and amenity for users.

Marking a significant milestone, the centre celebrated its first childbirth in January 2025, solidifying its role as a critical healthcare provider for Port Moresby and beyond.
