Media summary

Melbourne Walk marks the first new development on Bourke Street Mall in more than 50 years, creating a landmark mixed‑use precinct that celebrates the city’s rich and unique identity. Spanning a block once comprising eight separate buildings, the project unifies heritage and contemporary architecture to revitalise a key part of Melbourne’s pedestrian network. Four restored heritage façades anchor the development, preserving character while new façades reinterpret historic materials and geometries.

New arcades and laneways, including The Causeway and Union Lane, reintroduce permeability and natural light deep into the site, extending Melbourne’s fine grain pedestrian network.

Above the retail podium, Australia’s first dual‑brand IHG hotel – Hotel Indigo and Holiday Inn – offers 452 rooms, each with distinct interior identities shaped by site specific narratives and Melbourne’s laneway character.

Merging heritage, hospitality and public realm renewal, Melbourne Walk establishes a vibrant new destination in the CBD.

Melbourne Walk embodies a vision to reinvigorate the heart of the city, creating a destination woven into the fabric of Bourke Street Mall. It began with a belief that historic buildings are most meaningful when they remain active and relevant. Under Buchan’s stewardship, the design retains key design features with an architectural language that complements the scale, rhythm and character of the facades while remaining contemporary. The revitalised arcade restores permeability through the development, strengthening connection and shared urban experience. Hotel Indigo and Holiday Inn sit within this framework, supporting a renewed civic presence grounded in design, heritage and place.
