Marjorie’s house is a historic 1905 brick miners’ cottage. After three generations of occupation, this humble home required renewal to accommodate the family’s current and future generations.
Selective demolition minimised disruption to the original structure, with a focus on restoring existing materials for reuse.
Retaining the central circulation axis, transitioning from old to a new split-level living pavilion through an intimate courtyard garden, enhances spatial variety and passive design performance.
Raised 1.4 meters above ground level to mitigate flood risks, the new rear addition enhances daily activities and outdoor connections, centred around a terraced garden, creating a sensory-rich, welcoming space that encourages smooth transitions and strong connections to the outdoors.
From inception to completion in under 24 months, Maryville Heirloom House demonstrates the value of respecting the unique aspects of existing structures and implementing responsive housing solutions to promote renewal and resilience in our built environment.
