Media summary

Maribyrnong Civic Precinct and Community Hub Redevelopment is a transformative initiative breathing new life into the heart of the community. It delivers a long-term, sustainable solution with far-reaching aspirations for the future of Council and the community. It celebrates and connects the heritage of Footscray Town Hall, with new community spaces, agile workspaces and a new community park.

A primary design driver was the return of public life to the Town Hall building and restoring connection between the community and the civic centre of this municipality.

A new 6-star designed Green Star building provides a central location for Council staff who were previously spread across three separate buildings while the Town Hall is liberated from its civic administrative function and returned to the people for use as community meeting spaces.

The project demonstrates how sensitive, healthy building and precinct renewal can be a catalyst for a more sustainable way forward.

This project has reshaped how we work and how our community experiences Council. The new Civic Precinct provides a calm, light‑filled workplace where staff feel supported and connected with spaces that encourage collaboration and wellbeing. Reopening the Footscray Town Hall has restored a sense of civic pride, giving the community welcoming places to meet, learn and celebrate. The integration of new buildings, a shared park and restored heritage has created a place people want to spend time in. Thoughtful, sustainable design choices mean the precinct is comfortable, efficient and economical to run, allowing us to focus on serving our community.
