The redevelopment of the Lismore City Library was undertaken in response to the devastating 2022 floods, which severely damaged the century-old interwar red-brick building at the heart of the city’s cultural precinct. BKA Architecture, engaged by Bennett Constructions, led the restoration with a clear design philosophy: resilience, adaptability, and cultural continuity.
More than a reinstatement, the project embedded a flood management plan into the building’s design. Collections, mobile shelving, and furnishings were planned for quick relocation to upper floors, with circulation and storage reconfigured to support efficient disaster response. The building was also reimagined as a stronger civic hub—enhancing accessibility, integrating multipurpose rooms, and creating engaging features such as the children’s hardwood “tree.”
By balancing heritage sensitivity with contemporary needs, the library now stands as a symbol of recovery and resilience—an inclusive, inspiring place for learning, gathering, and cultural life.
The refurbished Lismore Library has changed the way we serve our community. Light-filled, flexible spaces welcome everyone, from families reading together to students looking for quiet study zones. These adaptable areas invite people to stay longer, focus, and connect. Accessibility and comfort are built in so it works well for all ages. After the 2022 floods, the library refurbishment has enabled the library to stand as a strong and welcoming hub of learning, showing our commitment to inclusion and to a library that’s ready for the future.
