Media summary

Cumulus Studio created a contemporary learning environment that allows for flexibility in how students learn, and how teachers teach. Incorporating two central learning courtyards, a library, dental clinic, multi-purpose hall, administration hub, and hosting up to 350 kindergarten to year six students, the new school alleviates the pressure on adjacent schools within the growing area, while giving significant consideration to welcoming, inclusive and connective spaces.

Each of the 14 General Learning Areas are connected by a central learning courtyard, into which each classroom is orientated for the promotion of visual and physical connectivity. The flexible interior design of the classrooms, which feature a series of operable walls, allows learning areas to adapt to traditional single-class teaching environments or open co-teaching spaces, as well as being adaptable to future changes in education styles.

Ranging a sequence of learning spaces in a continuous looping configuration around a restorative native landscape by SBLA Studio, Legana Primary School achieves shelter, connection, and playfulness. Inventive ‘mountains’ and ‘caves’ give overlook and retreat; artful window placements catch light; operable walls bring classes together. Semi-outdoor spaces, such as the continuous covered walkway and high-canopied outdoor sports room, provide social thresholds and spaces of delay and transition. The result is an engaging, joyful place for children, teachers, and community.

In approaching the design of Legana Primary School, we worked closely with Cumulus Studio to create a space that allowed teaching and learning to be aligned with modern pedagogy. We especially appreciated the collaborative manner in which Cumulus Studio approached our working relationship, often scrutinising our communicated requirements before rearticulating them in practical ways, allowing everyone to engage and understand how the spaces would work together. The result is a new school that has become a true local hub for students, teachers, families and community users alike.
