Media summary

The Larrakeyah Passchendaele Refurbishment is a restoration project that pays homage to the historical significance of a building within the Larrakeyah Barracks precinct. Designed by architect Beni Burnett and originally constructed in 1939, Passchendaele underwent a transformation, preserving its historical significance while meeting the contemporary needs of a Defence Living-in accommodation (LIA).

The refurbishment fosters the preservation of heritage values and the original design principles featuring climate-focused elements like louvres, open air spaces and cross ventilation for cooling and sustainability. Internal layout changes reconfigure sleeping areas and improve the layout of common areas for optimised social interaction, while preserving significant heritage features like the southern staircase.

The Larrakeyah Passchendaele Refurbishment project represents a harmonious blend of heritage preservation, contemporary and sustainable design. Through meticulous attention to detail and commitment to excellence, GHD Design transformed the building into a functional, culturally enriching space that honours the past while embracing the future.

The design of the Larrakeyah Passchendaele Refurbishment significantly enhances our Living-in Accommodation (LIA) while honouring the heritage of our barracks. The thoughtful layout changes improve the living environment, fostering camaraderie and morale among Defence recruits.

Preservation of heritage elements adds character and a sense of history, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who came before us. Additionally, the incorporation of sustainable features aligns with our commitment to environmental responsibility. Overall, the refurbishment enhances quality of life to those living within the building, providing a welcoming and culturally significant space where we can thrive together in.
