How can architecture shape learning environments that foster the next generation of innovative leaders? Kilvington Grammar School’s new STEM and Library Centre, The Hive, was conceived as a biophilic living laboratory inspiring innovation, collaboration and hands-on learning. Anchored by a retained Eucalyptus tree, the project revitalises the site through an architectural response that symbolically unites technical learning and the natural environment, reinforcing innovation, STEM education, and environmental responsibility.

The design emerged from a student-led engagement process integrated into the curriculum, capturing their aspirations for sustainability, innovation and wellbeing. The high-performing building operates as a learning tool, embedding environmental principles into everyday experiences. Exposed structure, services and IT infrastructure make the building’s operations legible and interactive, while operable louvres provide hands-on experience with environmental management. Shaped by student voice and grounded in nature, The Hive exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can unite pedagogy, place and performance within a cohesive biophilic framework.

“The Hive’s outstanding success owes much to CHC’s consultative approach and responsive design. Labs and makerspaces encourage hands-on learning. The light-filled library supports academic and pastoral needs with a natural environment encouraging outdoor flow.

CHC’s design has taken the mystery out of STEM. Kids are learning in flexible spill-out spaces, corridors, the atrium and outdoors. With the fab lab you can watch materials being built. The whole facility is a learning environment, visible to the community.

The Hive has completely transformed teaching and learning, increasing student agency, comfort and wellbeing. Its open, collaborative, technology-rich environment inspires curiosity and exploration.”
