Media summary

Kavillo Studios are 4 studio buildings on a rural site just outside of Mudgee in Central West NSW that have been owner built by Sculptor Michael Ferris. The tent-like structures of galvanised sheet metal and rammed earth draw from the prevailing rural character of buildings in close proximity that encompass shearing sheds and Pise’ structures. The insulated rammed earth wall anchors the building to the site while providing privacy from the neighbouring buildings that fan West while the folding roof closes to the West to protect the building from the harsh Western sun. The development is entirely off grid utilising 26kw of solar panels that are stored in an innovative mechanical, flywheel battery. The site is serviced by 210,000L of rainwater storage while generous roof overhangs and pergolas protect the building from summer sun.
