The Kaurna People
South Australia
Responding to its compact site, K House reverses the typical approach of ‘house at the front, garden at the back’. Solid walls extend outwards towards the street boundary, enclosing a generous landscaped courtyard, living spaces are then re-oriented to enjoy northern sun and garden aspect.
The solid masonry volume is balanced by a delicate veil of horizontal external blinds, concealing full height glazing behind. Voids, courtyards and skylights are carved strategically through the building volume, allowing natural light to permeate deep into the plan. Internally, the solidity of the masonry is balanced with the play of light throughout, filtered sunlight renders the texture of the masonry walls, the imperfect finish holds shadow, giving life to the walls.
Strongly grounded in its context, the home carefully balances connection and enclosure. Light and landscape are embedded throughout, creating a spatially generous, yet private sanctuary – a calm, understated backdrop for a rich life.
We are enjoying our new home more than we ever imagined.
Architects Ink have excelled in creating a beautifully spacious home on a compact allotment, which enjoys an abundance of natural light, lofty ceilings and peaceful outlooks over private courtyard gardens. We love the rooftop garden, fresh herbs and citrus are always at hand.
Our main living area makes entertaining family and friends an absolute joy. It is an attractive and inviting space, opening to the main garden and swimming pool, and features a much-admired wine room.
We are so proud of the home which has been created for us.
