The Jukambi Courts at John Paul College deliver a refined, climate-responsive sporting precinct embedded within daily campus life. Developed as part of the College’s long-term master plan, the project provides six tennis courts, two hot-shot courts and two multi-purpose covered courts, supported by integrated amenities and shaded spectator areas.
A hovering roof canopy on slender glulam timber structure offers shelter while preserving openness, visual permeability and connection to landscape. Overhangs, orientation and roof geometry provide shade, cross-ventilation and acoustic comfort, minimising reliance on mechanical systems.
Replacing steel with timber reduces embodied carbon, stores carbon long term, and adds warmth to a robust sporting typology. The design respects Country by acknowledging the Turrbal, Jagera and Yugambeh peoples and treating sustainability as an ethical responsibility, not a technical add-on. Durable materials and recycled-content elements support long-term performance, resulting in a resilient civic asset.
The Jukambi Courts Precinct has transformed our approach to outdoor learning and elevated sporting programs while honouring Indigenous heritage at John Paul College. The design creates versatile spaces seamlessly integrating physical activity, social connection, and educational opportunities beyond the traditional classroom. All weather covered courts enable year-round programs, enhancing physical education delivery while providing an environment where all students thrive. Students naturally gravitate here during breaks and lunch, while the facility also hosts events that bring our JPC community together. The design's aesthetic quality and functionality reflect our commitment to excellence and creating inspiring spaces for generations to come.
