Located on a steeply sloping site along Ivanhoe’s iconic Boulevard, Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Sports & Aquatic Centre is a world-class sporting and education facility within a sensitive residential and landscape context.
The 6-level Sports & Aquatic Centre features four multipurpose basketball/netball courts, change facilities, a weights room, aerobics and yoga studios, classrooms, staff offices, a kiosk and a variable-depth 50m pool with spectacular views across The Boulevard and Yarra River.
Nestled 25m below natural ground level has provided significant thermal mass benefits, with stable below-ground temperatures drastically reducing the air conditioning load across the entire building. In addition, rainwater harvesting, 95kW of solar panels atop the pool roof, and multiple inclusive and wellbeing focussed design initiatives have resulted in an outstanding future-proofed facility supporting student learning, health, wellbeing and sporting achievement.
Built on the site of the old pool, the new Sports and Aquatic Centre is the largest capital works project the School has ever undertaken and has completely exceeded everyone’s expectations.
World-class facilities encourage staff and students to be active and undertake physical activity and education in many inviting spaces, including the swimming pool, dance/aerobics studios, gymnasium and courts facilitating basketball, badminton, volleyball and netball.
McIldowie Partners, Building Engineering and the broader consultant team have ensured the centre’s footprint fits appropriately onto the property, maximising space and creating a visually impressive, eco-friendly, and practical building that complements its surrounds.
