House on a Hill is an outward expression of its owners – a metalworker and an artist, and their love of living amongst an expansive rural Australian landscape. Conceived as a place to live, work and retreat from the world, the formal composition of the home is defined by curated and framed views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Recessive in its dark outer skin, the low-lying form hugs the terrain, acting as a shelter to the performative nature on show. Â
We requested the house respond to its site, climate, and the way we live. Set on an exposed hill, it frames expansive views across Gippsland while providing shelter from extreme wind and rain. The use of stone, timber, and a low-profile form anchors the house into the landscape, allowing it to blend rather than dominate. The open-plan layout supports our two-person living, while flexible rooms accommodate an office, studio practice, outdoor work access, and future resale needs. A well-sealed thermal envelope that protects the main living quarters, enabling high ceilings, light-filled spaces, and a constant connection to nature.
