Her Majesty’s Theatre Ballarat is the oldest continually running theatre on mainland Australia and continues to be a venue close to the hearts of the local, regional and state community. Conservation Studio undertook Stage 3 of the Theatre’s redevelopment, which prioritised upgrades to accessibility, safety, compliance and functionality.
Accessibility upgrades include two new accessible lifts, improving access for patrons, staff and performers. The front-of-house features a new box office and bar, enlarged and refurbished foyers and upgraded bathrooms. New Auditorium works discretely integrated safety upgrades into a highly significant heritage space. And the redeveloped ‘Lucky’s Foyer’ unifies front-of-house and back-of-house through the central administration hub.
A specialised consultant team developed fire engineering strategies, accessibility strategies, and structural and services upgrades, while also caring for and showcasing the original heritage fabric.
The Theatre is included on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR H0648) for architectural and historical significance to State of Victoria.
