Green Square Public School and Community Spaces in Sydney’s inner south brings essential civic infrastructure to one of Australia’s densest and fastest-growing neighbourhoods. The four-storey K-6 primary school, delivered in partnership with the City of Sydney and School Infrastructure NSW (SINSW), includes dedicated community spaces as well as sports courts and halls shared between the school and the public.Â
The project was an ambitious collaboration in which design was key to meeting the complex demands of a tidal, all-ages population. Clear pathways and discreet security lines help manage flow and separation before, during, and after school. At the same time, a design that creates a playful, welcoming atmosphere ensures that both schoolchildren and the community feel a strong sense of safety, belonging, and connection to this place and its history. Â
Green Square Public School stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when architecture and innovative educational vision are conceived as one. The design achieves exceptional fluidity between learning and communal spaces. The school is organised around an educational interface that dissolves traditional boundaries. Shared hubs, collaborative zones and adaptable environments allow seamless movement between explicit instruction and inquiry, group collaboration and independent reflection, focused study and play-based learning. The spaces reflect a deep understanding of how children best learn and the approaches teachers use to facilitate that. Visibility, flexibility and creativity are embedded throughout, without compromising functionality.
