Drawing on nostalgia, collective memory and the rituals of summer, Messina Glenelg acts as a social interior rather than a conventional hospitality fit out. It is expressive, site-responsive and embraces boldness as a deliberate architectural intervention. Referencing the saturated colour and energy of southern Italian gelato stores, the space taps is deliberately approachable, inviting promenade crowds and charged anticipation.
Confident, playful and immersive, the space layers colour and reflection together with illumination to create an environment that feels generous and animated without feeling excessive. The plan prioritises openness and movement, allowing expansion and contraction between peak summer crowds and slower moments. Limited fixed seating encourages a dynamic experience, reinforcing gelato as a social ritual rather than a static experience. Street-facing and open, the interior engages directly with the public realm, the space act as a point of connection – inviting a pause – while embedding itself within the community’s seasonal rhythms.
